Farming

Achentoul Farms Ltd runs a flock of 1,200 North Country Cheviot ewes and gimmers and a herd of around 70 suckler cows

The breeding flock of ewes has an enviable reputation built up over the last 50 years or more and our average prices for cast ewes and lambs regularly top the sales in Lairg.

The sheep are run extensively over the estate and are present on the hill at low densities for parts of the year. They lamb on the in-bye land and which extends to some four hundred acres of improved grassland. Much of this in-bye ground was improved in the 1960s and 1970s.

We own a 250 acre unit at Edderton near Tain where we winter the cattle, ewe lambs, and tup lambs for breeding stock. We also make all our annual hay and silage at Edderton.
